After Megan gave her excuse, Bianca was quick to grab her daughter’s wrist and drag her into the room. She pointed a judging finger to the mess that had been left behind in the kitchen, starting with the tray full of soiled dishes that Karlie had been left with and ending at the untouched bowl of mousse from before.

“We are still running a restaurant, like it or not, and we have a duty to our guests. Something terrible happened today, but these people are still customers and what they say about us when they go home will follow us. Do we want the new Pearl Street to be synonymous with going hungry or do we want to go above and beyond?”

Megan gave the only correct answer.

“We want to do right by our customers. I know I certainly do.”

Bianca looked to Karlie, who nodded in unspoken agreement. Megan’s mother clapped her hands and motioned for the others to come in.

“Then this is what we are going to do. The police have asked that I bring all that mousse so they can have it tested for poisons. It is a waste of food, I know, but the town will comp us. But what you two need to do is to get the dishes cleaned and start a new batch of mousse. The police have authorized us to do so as long as we open new packages of ingredients just in case. We’re going to feed our guests and treat them like family. Any questions?”

Karlie raised her hand.

“Yes, Karlie?”

“May I start on the mousse?”

Bianca smiled at the woman.

“Of course, then that leaves Megan to do the dishes.”

Megan darted a teasing glance at Karlie.

“Gee, thanks, Karlie, I mean it.”

Megan moved to take the soiled dishes off the tray and dunk them in the cleaning sink when Bianca touched her daughter’s wrist to get her attention.

Megan looked at Bianca.

“Before you get started, how are Denver and Josh doing?”
